Home Hardening
Roof - 5 Feet
Immediate Zone
Our detailed property and structure assessment is the most detailed assessment on the market. Strictly adhering to the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 1144 Standard for Reducing Structure Ignition Hazards from Wildland Fire. The Standard for all structure and property assessments in the Wildland Urban Interface areas.

Roof & Gutters
Document the type, condition, and construction of roofing materials.
No Overhanging material within 10 Feet if roof.
No Flammable vegetation within 10 feet of chimney, with 1/2" spark arrestor
Inspect for any areas for debris and litter to collect, i.e. gutters, skylights, roof valley's, etc.

Siding
Inspect all siding. Plug and caulk gaps and joints
Vertical clearance from ground surface to bottom of siding greater then 6 inches
Develop adequate defensible space, particularly in the immediate zone.

Document combustible materials, on, or next to your deck

The importance of ember and flame entry into vents during wildfires has resulted in the development of vents designed to resist the intrusion of embers and flame
Non-Combustible Gutter Guard Installation
Gutter Guards reduce the amount of vegetation litter and debris that accumulate in your gutter, and, therefore, reduce the need to clean it. Reducing a receptive fuel bed for embers to ignite and catch your home on fire.
Reflective Address Sign Installation
Remember that firefighters may need to locate your home quickly at night, during a storm, or in smoky conditions. Help them find your home by making your address clearly visible from the road.

Zone 1
5 Feet - 30 Feet
Intermediate Zone
The objective of this zone is to reduce the risk of fire spreading from surrounding vegetation to the home. Lean indicates that there is only a small amount of vegetation, if any, present. Vegetation should be grouped in discontinuous islands.
Included
- Remove all portions of trees within ten feet (10 feet) of chimney and/or stovepipe outlets
- Maintain trees adjacent to or overhanging a structure free of dead/dying wood
- Climbing vines must be maintained to be free of dead and dying materials or removed from trees and structures
- Remove dead and dying vegetation from the property within zone
- Maintain shrubs to be free from dead and dying materials
- Prune trees to 6 feet from ground. (or 1/3 the height of the tree, recommended)
- Cut grasses to 6 inches or less. To prevent erosion, do not cut to bare mineral soil
- Clearing around propane and fuel tanks
- Move firewood & lumber out of Zone 1, or cover in a fire-resistant enclosure

Zone 2
30 Feet - 100 Feet
Extended Zone
Zone 2 extends from 30′ to at least 100’–more defensible space may be required based on topography, vegetation, or building construction. Work with your neighbor to gain permission to clear defensible space on their property if it will help protect your home.
Included
- Cut or mow annual grass down to a maximum height of 4 inches
- Create horizontal space between shrubs and trees
- Create vertical space between grass, shrubs and trees
- Remove fallen leaves, needles, twigs, bark, cones, and small branches. However, they may be permitted to a depth of 3 inches
- All exposed wood piles must have a minimum of 10 feet of clearance, down to bare mineral soil, in all directions
