Brandguard Vents® were invented in 2003 by Brent Berkompas while working as a firefighter for the City of San Bernardino, California. He was fighting the 2003 and 2007 California wildfires and saw firsthand the vulnerability of the thousands of homes affected. Watching the embers fly directly into the homes through the unprotected mesh vent openings, Brent knew that something had to be done to prevent this from happening in the future

Vulcan Technologies, Inc is a private company based in California, which developed the Vulcan Vents and provides consulting services for fire retardant and fire resistant construction, including the use of the Vulcan Vents for wildfire fire protection. The Vulcan Vents uses a proprietary coating from Firefree Coatings, www.firefree.com.
The patented design of our flame-resistant vents includes many key features. One outstanding benefit of the Vulcan Vent is that it’s a self-closing fire vent. This feature activates when the vent is exposed to fire. The vents include a mesh covered with a proprietary coating that expands when exposed to fires, thus closing the cells and stopping fire or ember penetration. Our fire-retardant vents also offer protection from ember penetration even before the cells close off. In many cases, embers will be carried for miles by the wind and will penetrate a home before the fire ever comes near.
